Dolphins and Whales Need our Help

There are many research, conservation and awareness projects that WDCS has the expertise but not the funding to undertake.

We'd like to thank grant makers who are currently providing funds to enable the award winning Dolphin Watch prgoram to be undertaken in three South Australian schools.

The George Alexander Foundation has provided a 3 year commitment to the Port Pirie Dolphin Watch program.

The Federal Government, through their Coastcare initiative, have provided funding to establish Dolphin Watch in Whyalla and continue the program on Kangaroo Island.

Off-shore Cetacean Surveys
(Upper Spencer Gulf, South Australia)

The number of dolphins dying from entanglements in South Australia's Upper Spencer Gulf could be threatening the long-term viability of the population. Research would provide information on where particular dolphins live so that if they are found dead with net marks we would know where it potentially happened.
Funding would allow us to conduct surveys and over time ascertain the highest risk to this population of dolphins.

Funding is required to:

  • Fund scientists to conduct surveys
  • Liaise with the fishing industry

Mauis and Hectors Protection
(New Zealand)

Mauis dolphin (popoto) is the worlds rarest marine dolphin. A subspecies of the Hectors dolphin, Mauis were once found around the New Zealand North Island coastline. Now Mauis dolphins are found only off the north-west coast of the North Island.

Mauis dolphins number less than 111 individuals, with just an estimated 25 breeding females left. They are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN (World Conservation Union) and are at serious risk of extinction.

Research into the extent that the Mauis dolphin travels into any one of a number of harbours in its small territorial range. This would help us to further understand its habits and campaign to save them from extinction.

Funding is required to:

  • Fund scientists to conduct surveys
  • Print and distribute campaign material

Dolphin Watch Roll Out
(across Australia)

Dolphin Watch has been established in three school communities in South Australia; Kangaroo Island, Port Pirie and Whyalla. Rolling out this successful program to other schools in Australia would inspire more students and communities to become custodians of their local dolphin population.

Funding is required for:

  • Data collection and recording tools, including GPS devices

Dolphin Intrepretive Centre
(Port Adelaide, South Australia)

The Land Management Corporation have recently announced an exciting development of the historic port precinct Cruickshank's Corner. WDCS is working with the development agencies to establish a Dolphin Interpretive Centre in this area.

Funding is required to:

  • Fit out with state of the art displays

Memorial Sculpture to Billie the Dolphin
(Port Adelaide, South Australia)

Billie was a much loved dolphin amongst the Port River dolphin population and her fascinating story is to be celebrated with a public art piece. Funding will allow this public tribute to happen.

Funding is required to:

  • Fund the community artwork
